Rivane Neuenschwander

Rivane Neuenschwander (1967, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) lives and works in São Paulo. Neuenschwander has developed a unique practice within Brazilian conceptualism to investigate the roles of chance, control, and collaboration. The artist frequently employs external forces—both people and natural processes—to produce a series of dynamic and autonomous outcomes. Her works aim to expand collective consciousness by highlighting certain phenomena that are often overlooked, but which, when finally seen, prove to be strikingly remarkable.
Ash Wednesday / Epilogue
In the framework of «Biotopías 5», Rivane Neuenschwander presents, in collaboration with Cao Guimarães, the video Ash Wednesday / Epilogue (2006). Recently exhibited at Tate Modern in London, the piece shows a group of ants transporting pieces of colored paper, a reference to the confetti used in Brazil exclusively during Carnival. Ash Wednesday is the final day of Carnival, an epilogue to four days of celebration. Neuenschwander’s works are included in prominent international collections such as Tate (London), Thyssen-Bornemisza (Vienna), Centre Pompidou (Paris), MACBA (Barcelona), Guggenheim Museum (New York), and MoMA (New York).
