Laboratory for Microclimates(LfM) is an art initiative of artist Annechien Meier, engineer Joost Suasso de Lima de Prado and filmmaker/conceptual designer Gert-Jan Gerlach. With their art and film projects, they aim to raise awareness of urban agriculture from a climate perspective. Their work focuses mainly on questions of water and heat in the urban environment and climate processes around the world. For Biotopías 2 they have created “Dew Catcher Microclimate” using only natural materials. It is a flower shape funnel of banana and cycads leaves that collect the night dew. The work is a tentative to solve the problem of drought. This is a work of art halfway between the symbolic and the practical, a natural artefact that gives hope through beauty and bio-engineering. Like other works in Biotopías 2, this work unfolds into a digital version in the SaladeArteSocial.COM that goes beyond mere documentation, but is an online experience. The work of the Laboratory for Microclimate is thought of as an interactive video experience in which the user is encouraged to make by herself the “Dew Catcher Microclimate”.
